The light, the colors and also the subject of the original image play an important role in the final product. The images can be produced from photo montage, the images can be dissolved into fluid shapes creating the non objective or abstract impressionist photography. It can be also an image issued from merging pictures of paintings and photos digitally manipulated.

The name photography based digital art definies very well how the artwork is made, it means that it is an artwork made through the elaboration of a picture. But in the gender photography we can find other kinds of pictures, named in other ways, but that can be considered photography based digital art. We can categorize them as branches of photography based digital art, representing different kinds of images. In many times the artists donìt know how to call their artwork, so choose a name they think, more than others, describing their woek. Here I have considered two of them:

A dream image representing the albedo, step of alchemy. Albedo is one of the four major stages of the magnum opus; along with nigredo, citrinitas and rubedo. Following the chaos of the nigredo stage, the alchemist undertakes a purification in albedo, which is literally referred to as ablutio – the washing away of impurities. See references about albedo

Surrealism pictures are a branch or better the ancestor of photography based digital art. It is an “old” tachnique, started with the darkroom and used by surrealists as Salvador Dalì in some works of photography. The technique is known as photomontage and consistes in mounting more images into one.

This is the second surrealistic picture holding symbolic value. It represents the first step of alchemy, the nigredo or black work. In this step on the way to the the self awarness and enlightenment the self is distroyed for a rebirth in the second step, the albedo, represented in an other picture. Nigredo is the first step in the pathway to the philosopher’s stone all alchemical ingredients had to be cleansed and cooked extensively to a uniform black matter. See references about black work

In the surrealism photography the image can hold a conceptual and symbolic value, in contrast with non objective photograpy, where the image interpretation depends on the watcher imagination. It takes the place or better can be used along the symbols of the world cultures. We have symbols like Swastika, Cross, Moon, Sun, and many others used by official religions and mystic movements, related to a specific meaning. The two swastikas toghether simbolise the equilibrium, the cross the rebirth and the Moon, in the islamic religion, has different meanings depending on its color. All these symbols evoque, in their culture and religion, a specific sensation, message. So through the surrealism photography we can create images transmitting messages as well. The depicted situations, landscapes create a dream world which makes our imagination working. We start from the rational sphere, given by a recognizable image for reaching the emotional sphere.
