This is the second surrealistic picture holding symbolic value. It represents the first step of alchemy, the nigredo or black work. In this step on the way to the the self awarness and enlightenment the self is distroyed for a rebirth in the second step, the albedo, represented in an other picture. Nigredo is the first step in the pathway to the philosopher’s stone all alchemical ingredients had to be cleansed and cooked extensively to a uniform black matter. See references about black work
